Lehite PN & GN 1. Son of MOSIAH No. 2, missionary, ca. 91 BC (Mosiah 27:34; Alma 22:35; 23:1; 25:17; 27:19; 31:6, 32)
2. City, perhaps named from No. 1 (Alma 51:26)

Etymology

The name resembles biblical PNs with the element nēr, e.g., Abner, “the [divine] father is light” (see standard biblical commentaries for other examples). OMNER could mean “the [divine] kinsman is light” (JH), from ʿmm, “people, kinsman.” In the singular, “people, kinsman,” in Hebrew is ʿam. The GN probably was taken from the PN.

Cf. Book of Mormon OMNI, COMNOR, TEOMNER, AMNOR
