Etymology

Hebrew PN & GN layiš “Lion” (Judges 18:7, 1 Samuel 25:44), also known as lešem (Joshua 19:47, possibly with (1) a name-formative in -ām or -ān, or (2) enclitic mem,[1] or (3) case ending as in cognate Akkadian nēšum[2] ); cf. GN layišâ, “Lioness” (north of JERUSALEM), and lwš (ketib at 2 Samuel 3:15) = Israelite GN Dan.
