Hebrew kōkāb “star” (Arabic al-kawkab), Akkadian kukkabū ( Sumerian MÚL). Indeed, circa 1,500 B.C. - 300 A.D. circumpolar Kochab (β Ursae Minoris, magnitude 2.08) was the North Star closest to the “center” of the night sky (then at declination 83̊.5) – a position now occupied by Polaris (α Ursae Minoris).[1]
The word kōkāb is attested 37 times in the HEBREW Bible, usually plural, except in Numbers 24:17 and Amos 5:26
