Etymology

The GN JOSHUA may be from the OT PN JOSHUA, from the HEBREW yehôšûaʿ, "the Lord is salvation, deliverance, help," (HALOT). The land may well have been named after its first settler, since "it was the custom of the people of Nephi to call their lands, and their cities, and their villages, yea, even their small villages, after the name of him who first possessed them" (Alma 8:7).
