Etymology

The PN JONAS may be the Greek form of the OT name Jonah, from the Hebrew noun yônâh, “dove.”[1] Alternatively, JONAS may be from the HEBREW (<yahweh) + nēs, “the Lord is a standard, banner; miracle.”
