Biblical DN | 1. | Name of the God of ISRAEL (2 Nephi 22:2 = Isaiah 12:2; Moroni 10:34) |
Etymology
JEHOVAH is the name of the deity based on the tetragrammaton (four-letter word or name) YHWH with the addition of vowels from the deity name Adonai.[1] It occurs twice: once in an ISAIAH passage of 2 Nephi, and once at the end of the Book of Mormon, in Moroni 10. It is possible that the pronunciation of the name was maintained among the NEPHITES since the family of LEHI left JERUSALEM before the exile. After that time the Jewish hesitance to pronounce the tetragrammaton as the name of deity became a firm practice. On the variant spellings JEHOVAH/Jehovah, see Jehovah Variant.
