Lehite gentlic 1. Descendants of JACOB #3 (Jacob 1:13; 4 Nephi 1:36, 37; Mormon 1:8)

Etymology

The name JACOBITES is the gentilic from JACOB. The Book of Mormon never uses the singular, only the plural, and it always refers to descendants of Book of Mormon JACOB, never to the biblical Jacob. Therefore, it is probably not the functional equivalent of the Hebrew bĕnē-yaʿăqōb “sons of Jacob” attested in Malachi 3:6 (3 Nephi 24:6).

Cf. Book of Mormon PN JACOB (House of/Sons of) and JACOBUGATH.
