Etymology

Until a possible language origin for JAREDITE can be determined, all suggestions for etymologies of JAREDITE names must remain more speculative than substantive.

No etymology is suggested.

Various suggestions have been made, none of which are convincing: Old Akkadian (Ur III) river name IDEurtum (Gelb, 8) (JAT). Late Babylonian ḫartibi, LÚḫartibi (= HEBREW ḥarḥīm), “magician, scribe, interpreter of dreams” < Sumerian gar.tum, “prophet, fortuneteller”? (RFS). Possibly cf. EGYPTIAN ḥry-tm, “who is perfect” (an obscure title), which may be the source of the HEBREW cited above *(who said this?).
