Etymology
No etymology is suggested.
If JAREDITE names can be traced to Semitic roots, then the Hebrew GN ETHER in Joshua 15:42 and 19:7 may be appealed to for an etymology. There are three roots
- `tr in Hebrew, one meaning βbe abundant,β another βodorβ and the third βpray, supplicate.β The latter might be an appropriate description of the Book of Mormon
prophet ETHER (JAT). βAbundanceβ could also be an acceptable etymology (Reynolds, Commentary on the Book of Mormon, VI, p. 46). Cf. also West Semitic βJether or Etherβ (HWN in SC, 195).
