Etymology
No etymology is suggested.
If JAREDITE names can be traced to Semitic roots, then the Hebrew GN ETHER in Joshua 15:42 and 19:7 may be appealed to for an etymology. There are three roots
- `tr in Hebrew, one meaning โbe abundant,โ another โodorโ and the third โpray, supplicate.โ The latter might be an appropriate description of the Book of Mormon
prophet ETHER (JAT). โAbundanceโ could also be an acceptable etymology (Reynolds, Commentary on the Book of Mormon, VI, p. 46). Cf. also West Semitic โJether or Etherโ (HWN in SC, 195).
