This biblical GN is the English rendering of the original Assyrian language name of their homeland, Aššur, and the city of the same name, probably after their patron god, Aššur. As has been pointed out, the biblical genealogies give “Asshur, . . . the son of Shem” ([http://scriptures.lds.org/en/1_chr/1/17#17 1 Chronicles 1:17]) as the eponymous ancestor of the Assyrians (Reynolds, DBM 85).

ASSYRIA אשור is the name of an ancient Near Eastern land located in Mesopotamia. It occurs in the ISAIAH section of the 2 Nephi with reference to the biblical land but does not refer to a separate Book of Mormon GN or PN. The GN ASSYRIA may derive from one of their capitals, Assur, itself probably taken from their national god, Assur.
