The biblical GN, ASSYRIA is the English name of the original homeland of the people called ASSYRIANS. One of the capital cities of the ASSYRIANS was called Aššur, from the same root. The city and the people no doubt took their name from the name of their national deity Aššur. As has been pointed out, the biblical genealogies name “Asshur, . . . the son of Shem” (1 Chronicles 1:17) as the eponymous ancestor of the ASSYRIANS (Reynolds, DBM 85).
ASSYRIA is the name of an ancient Near Eastern land located in Mesopotamia. It occurs in the ISAIAH section of the 2 Nephi with reference to the biblical land but does not refer to a separate Book of Mormon GN or PN. The GN ASSYRIA may derive from one of their capitals, Assur, itself probably taken from their national god, Assur.
