Etymology

The biblical GN, ASSYRIA is the English name of the original homeland of the people called ASSYRIANS. One of the capital cities of the ASSYRIANS was called AΕ‘Ε‘ur, from the same root. The city and the people no doubt took their name from the name of their national deity AΕ‘Ε‘ur. As has been pointed out, the biblical genealogies name β€œAsshur, . . . the son of Shem” (1 Chronicles 1:17) as the eponymous ancestor of the ASSYRIANS (Reynolds, DBM 85).
