‡AMALEKITE(S) Lehite gentilic Sect of apostates (many after the order of Nehor), allies of the Lamanites who built the city of Jerusalem, ca. 90 BC (Alma 21:2; 43:44) Gentilic of Amaleki The name seems to be the English rendering of the gentilic Amelik or Amalik. See Amelik for suggested etymologies (are these two spellings of Amalek, that are found in different manuscripts?). Notes Book of Mormon Amalekites, Amlicites/Amlikites, and Amalickiahites were each Nephite turncoat groups, and are to be grouped (as biblically) with Ishmaelite and general bnê-qeden (including Midian—Genesis 21:21; 25:6, 2, 16:15–6; Judges 6:3; 8:24, etc.); the cities of Lemuel & Middoni can be included in the configuration or league (Alma 47:35; 49:9) (RFS). To this might be added that the Amlicites are named from Amlici (q.v.) and the Amalickiahites from Amalickiah (q.v.), but the Book of Mormon Amalekites appear suddenly in the text with no explanation of their origin. It is not known if they are related to one of the men named Amaleki in the Book of Mormon (JAT). Cf. Book of Mormon Amaleki and biblical AMALEKITES
