Etymology
In contrast to the popular beliefs based on hasty, superficial but untenable derivations, there is still quite a discussion about the etymology of ירושלם “JERUSALEM” among those who study onomastica. For a rigorous discussion of the etymology of “JERUSALEM” see B. Schein, “Jerusalem,” Harper’s Bible Dictionary, 465; Philip King, “Jerusalem,” in Freedman, ed., Anchor Bible Dictionary, III:751.
