Biblical PN (NT) | 1. | Mother of JESUS mentioned in Mosiah 3:8; Alma 7:10 |
Etymology
MARY is mentioned as the mother of JESUS in Mosiah 3:8 and Alma 7:10 but is not mentioned as a separate PN or GN in the Book of Mormon. The PN MARY in the Book of Mormon is based on the KJV New Testament name of the mother of JESUS. MARY is usually derived from the HEBREW female PN miryam. While the etymology is disputed, a now fairly common suggestion derives it from Etyptian mryt meaning “loved one,” while “gift (of God)” has also been suggested.[1] The Hebrew name is realized in Greek as Mariam/Maria and in the Latin Vulgate as Mariam/Maria.
