Etymology

Until a possible language origin for JAREDITE can be determined, all suggestions for etymologies of JAREDITE names must remain more speculative than substantive.

If JAREDITE names can be traced to Semitic roots, one may suggest the HEBREW lābīʾ, "lion," where the "be" is pronounced as a "v" sound (in linguistic terminology, the intervocalic spirantization of a stop), or from the HEBREW root *LWH, "accompany; (in passive/middle form) be joined, join oneself (to)." The Biblical PN LEVI may derive from the latter root.
