SAMUEL is from the Hebrew shemuสพฤ“l "name of El" or "his name is El"; cf. Amorite Sa- mu-รบ-i-la, Sa-mi-ya, Su-mu-i-la [1] and Ugaritic sm-adil, ลกum-addi, ลกumu-abi[2].
