Jaredite PN | 1. | Son of OMER, a JAREDITE king (Ether 8:4-6). |
Etymology
Until a possible language origin for JAREDITE can be determined, all suggestions for etymologies of JAREDITE names must remain more speculative than substantive.
It would be tempting to see in ESROM the biblical name, attested in the New Testament as Esrom (Matthew 1:3 and Luke 3:33) and in the Old Testament as Hezron (Genesis 46:9), which may come from Hebrew แธฅeแนฃrรดn โenclosureโ[1] With ESROM, the โom may be a nominalizing element, such as possibly on the name Gershom (Exodus 2:22). (In Hebrew both โom and โon are nominalizing elements.)
Perhaps related to Hebrew Hezron is the Edomite PN Ezer from the root สพแนฃr, โto store up.โ[2]
Still another possibility is Hebrew สฟฤzer โhelp,โ which is attested in Hebrew PNs such as Ezra, Ezer, Ezri,[3] Ebenezer, etc. (JAT). This suggestion would also require the nominalizing element โom.
See EZROM / EZRUM, ZEEZROM / ZEEZRUM.
