Variant spelling of DESERET
Deseret
- Ether 2:3
- P: Deseret >jg deseret
- 1830-1849, 1858, 1920-1981: deseret
- 1852, 1879-1888, 1902-1907, 1911: Deseret
Discussion: Deseret was changed to deseret by John Gilbert in P; deseret appears to be a common noun, which justifies the lower-case spelling. There are other Book of Mormon names for things unknown to us, such as cumoms, cureloms, neas, and sheum. On the other hand, there are unique objects which are capitalized, such as Rameumptom and Liahona.
Summary: Skousen accepts lower-case deseret.
