SAMUEL is from the Hebrew shemuʾēl "name of El" or "his name is El"; cf. Amorite Sa- mu-ú-i-la, Sa-mi-ya, Su-mu-i-la [1] and Ugaritic sm-adil, šum-addi, šumu-abi.[2]
