Etymology

Perhaps the name could be divided into שמן šmn and ilom, in which case, the former may be “oil, fat,” and the latter something to do with “god” (Ugaritic il "god"; ilm "gods").

Also possible is שם šēm, “name,” and a derivation from the root nlh/y, e.g., נלת nlt in Isaiah 33:1 or מנלם minlām "possession of them" in Job 15:29 (see Arabic manal, naylun, nâʾlun, “wealth, possession”) (RFS). The latter suggestion would form the basis for the name “name/monument of wealth.”

Cf. Book of Mormon SHEM, SHIM, SHUM, SHEMLON, SHEMNON

Variants

Deseret Alphabet: 𐐟𐐆𐐣𐐤𐐌𐐢𐐊𐐤 (ʃɪmnaɪlʌn)
