Lehite GN | 1. | Land and city, ca. 121 BC (Mosiah 7:1 (x2), 2, 4, 21; 9:6, 8) |
Etymology
The GN LEHI-NEPHI is a combination of the PNs LEHI and NEPHI. Where this combination name first appears, in Mosiah 7 (5x), it is spelled LehiNephi, except once where Lehi is at the end of the line and is followed by a dash.
This city may have been identical to the city formerly known simply as NEPHI, which had been settled by NEPHI I and his people during the 6th c. BC (2 Nephi 5:8). It is possible that the LAMANITES, who were not friendly with NEPHI, renamed the site LEHI after MOSIAH I and his people had left. Thus, it would have been called simply LEHI by the LAMANITES when ZENIFF and his people arrived. Thus, too, when ZENIFF and the returning NEPHITES arrived (Mosiah 9:1, 6, 8), they may have wished to refer to the site by its original designation, NEPHI, but out of deference to the LAMANITE king, whom they accepted as their nominal leader, they settled for a compromise, i.e., LEHI-NEPHI.
