Lehite PN 1. NEPHITE scribe and historian, son of ENOS 4th – 5th c. BC (Jarom 1:1, 14; Omni 1:1)

Etymology

The PN JAROM may be a hypocoristic form of the hypothetical Jaromel/Jaromiah, from the Hebrew רם rām, “to rise, be exalted,” in the qal 3 m.s. jussive ירום Yārûm, with the meaning “may/let [God/the Lord] be exalted” (Isaiah 52:13, Psalms 18:47, 61:3). The printer’s manuscript PN variant form JORAM[1] may also arguably be from the HEBREW יורם yôrām, “Jehovah is exalted” (2 Samuel 8:10, 2 Chronicles 25:5).

Cf. Book of Mormon RAMAH, CUMORAH, JEREMIAH, JACOM, and NAHOM.
