Biblical gentilic 1. The inhabitants of ISRAEL (Helaman 8:11)

Etymology

ISRAELITE is the gentilic of ISRAEL. The singular never occurs in the Book of Mormon, and the plural, ISRAELITES, only this once. Wherever the King James Bible has Israelites, that is the plural, the Masoretic text of the Old Testament has simply yiśrāʾēl, i.e., no plural, no gentilic, etc. For example see Joshua 3:17. However, see Hebrew בני ישראל bĕnê-îśrā΄ēl (Exodus 9:7, Joshua 13:6,13) = Egyptian YsriЗr “Israel,” in line 27 of the Merneptah Stele.[1]

Variants

Deseret Alphabet: 𐐆𐐞𐐡𐐈𐐇𐐢𐐌𐐓𐐝 (ɪzræɛlaɪts)
