Jaredite PN | 1. | Son of JARED (Ether 6:14) |
Etymology
Until possible language affinities for JAREDITE names can be determined, all suggestions for etymologies of JAREDITE names must remain more speculative than substantive. With that caveat, the onomasticon does offer etymologies for some JAREDITE names, especially if it is possible that some JAREDITE names were translated into NEPHITE, or were otherwise related to one or more Semitic languages.
It is doubtful that the biblical PNs Maachah and Maacah (though the spelling is different in English, in HEBREW they are the same, maʿakāh) are the source of this Jaredite name because the “ain” of the HEBREW would not simply assimilate or altogether disappear. In addition, all the people with this name are female, where gender can be determined (JAT).
Variants
Deseret Alphabet: 𐐣𐐁𐐐𐐂 (meɪhɑː)
