Lehite gentilic Descendants of Jacob I (Jacob 1:13; Mormon 1:8)
'''Etymology'''

Gentilic of Jacob
The name '''J<small>ACOBITES</small>''' is the gentilic from '''J<small>ACOB</small>'''. The Book of Mormon never uses the singular, only the plural, and it always refers to descendants of Book of Mormon '''J<small>ACOB</small>''', never to the biblical Jacob. Therefore, it is probably not the functional equivalent of the Hebrew בני-יעקב  ''bĕnē-yaʿăqōb'' “sons of Jacob” attested in [https://www.lds.org/scriptures/ot/mal/3.6?lang=eng#5 Malachi 3:6] ([https://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/3-ne/24.6?lang=eng#5 3 Nephi 24:6]).

For the etymology see the standard biblical commentaries.

Lehite gentlic 1. Descendants of JACOB #3 (Jacob 1:13; 4 Nephi 1:36, 37; Mormon 1:8)

Etymology

The name JACOBITES is the gentilic from JACOB. The Book of Mormon never uses the singular, only the plural, and it always refers to descendants of Book of Mormon JACOB, never to the biblical Jacob. Therefore, it is probably not the functional equivalent of the Hebrew בני-יעקב bĕnē-yaʿăqōb “sons of Jacob” attested in Malachi 3:6 (3 Nephi 24:6).

Cf. Book of Mormon PN JACOB (House of/Sons of) and JACOBUGATH.

Variants

Deseret Alphabet: 𐐖𐐁𐐗𐐊𐐒𐐌𐐓𐐝 (dʒeɪkʌbaɪts)
