Jaredite PN | 1. | JAREDITE king (Ether 1:20, 21; 10:14, 15) |
Biblical PN | 2. | Son of JACOB (3 Nephi 24:3) |
Etymology
Although the etymology of JAREDITE names is conjectural at best, one may suggest the Hebrew lΔbΔ«ΚΎ, "lion," where the "be" is pronounced as a "v" sound (in linguistic terminology, the intervocalic spirantization of a stop),[1] or from the Hebrew root *LWH, "accompany; (in passive/middle form) be joined, join oneself (to)."[2] The Biblical PN LEVI may derive from the latter root.
