Jaredite PN 1. King (Ether 1:16–17, 10:29–30)

Etymology

No etymology is suggested.

Various suggestions have been made, none of which are convincing: Old Akkadian (Ur III) river name IDEurtum (Gelb, 8) (JAT). Late Babylonian ḫartibi, LÚḫartibi (= Hebrew ḥarḥīm), “magician, scribe, interpreter of dreams” < Sumerian gar.tum, “prophet, fortuneteller”? (RFS). Possibly cf. EGYPTIAN ḥry-tm, “who is perfect” (an obscure title), which may be the source of the Hebrew cited above *(who said this?).
