Jaredite PN 1. JAREDITE son of AKISH (Ether 9:8, 9)

Etymology

Until possible language affinities for JAREDITE names can be determined, all suggestions for etymologies of JAREDITE names must remain more speculative than substantive. With that caveat, the onomasticon does offer etymologies for some JAREDITE names, especially if it is possible that some JAREDITE names were translated into NEPHITE, or were otherwise related to one or more Semitic languages.

For the Book of Mormon NIMRAH, Cf. KJV GN Nimrah נמרה (Numbers 32:3; nimrā in Hebrew), Beth-Nimrah (Numbers 32:36; Joshua 13:27). One may also Cf. Sumerian Nibruki (*NIBUR) = Nippur.

The Elba GNs na-marki and na-ma-ra-atki could be from the same root, the latter being feminine and thus similar in the form to the Hebrew GN.

See also biblical nāmēr, "leopard, panther" (JAT, BU).[1]

Variants

Deseret Alphabet: 𐐤𐐆𐐣𐐡𐐂 (nɪmrɑː)

Notes

  1. It has been suggested that some Jaredite names (Coriantum, Coriantor, Shiblon/m, Levi, Lib, Nimrod) appear to be lion and leopard names (BU in NPSEHA 150.0 [Aug 1982]).
