Etymology
The biblical and Book of Mormon PN JACOB is from the Hebrew יעקב yaʿăqōb, probably a shortened form (it lacks the theophoric element) that therefore could mean “may (God) protect.”[1] Genesis 25:26 plays off of the similar sounding Hebrew noun ʿāqēb, “heel,” and the Hebrew verb ʿāqab, “betray.” In Genesis 32:28 Jacob was renamed ISRAEL.
See ISRAEL, JACOBITES, and JACOBUGATH.
