Etymology
Until possible language affinities for JAREDITE names can be determined, all suggestions for etymologies of JAREDITE names must remain more speculative than substantive. With that caveat, the onomasticon does offer etymologies for some JAREDITE names, especially if it is possible that some JAREDITE names were translated into NEPHITE, or were otherwise related to one or more Semitic languages.
EPHRAIM is cited in the Book of Mormon several times, once as the name of a JAREDITE hill, the remaining times as the name of the biblical son of JOSEPH in the ISAIAH passages of the Book of Mormon but is not otherwise used as a personal name.
The place name EPHRAIM אפרים may be a NEPHITE substitute for, or equivalent of, the JAREDITE name. (JAT) EPHRAIM may possibly derive from the HEBREW root *prh and have the meaning "grainland, pasture-land."
