Lehite PN 1. Son of King BENJAMIN, ca. ___BC (Mosiah 1:2)

Etymology

The Lehite PN HELORUM may derive from a hypothetical Hebrew *ḥêlyarôm, composed of the Hebrew noun ḥayil (in a contracted form ḥêl), meaning "army, power, bravery," and the Hebrew verb rûm in the imperfect form yārôm, "he shall exalt." Together, they would mean approximately, "May the hero [i.e. God] exalt." Alternatively, the otherwise unattested qal passive imperfect of rûm would be yurâm, which together with ḥêl would mean something like "The hero [God] is exalted." (SDR)

Another possibility would be a combination of the Hebrew חיל ḥêl "strength," and Hebrew אור ʼôr "light" to form the hypothetical *ḥêl-ʼôram "power-of-their-light/revelation," to which compare Psalm 110:3 bĕyôm ḥêlekā "in the day of thy power." (RFS)

Helorum (also Helorus) is the Latin name of a Greek colony in Sicily, Helōron/Helōros.[1] That a Greek GN could be the source for Book of Mormon PN HELORUM would require the supposition that a Greek made it to the Americas, perhaps accompanying the ship transporting Mulek of Judah to the New World.[2] (RFS)

Notes

  1. Helōron was founded in the 8th and 7th centuries B.C., along with Syracuse, Akrai, and Kosmenai. See Thucydides, History of the Peloponnesian War, VI.5.2; Livy, History of Rome, 24.XXXV.1-3; Diodorus, 23.4.1.
  2. We have other possible instances of Greek names in the Book of Mormon, which may similarly be explained as part of Greater Greece. See for example ZENOS, TIMOTHY, JONAS, ARCHEANTUS and LACHONEUS.
